Doubt written by Tony P: How would a car insurance company know if i had a claim on previous insurance policy?

As above, i claimed on my existing car insurance policy about 2 years a go now. When getting new quotes they ask if i’ve had any claims in the past 3 years (which i have). But just wondering how would my new insurance company know either way if i put ‘no claims’. Surely if they were all on one database they wouldnt be asking me in the first place?! Would they check for any reason? And what would happen if i was found out? Thanks.

They ask now, and check later. You could find yourself canceled for falsification. Once canceled, you may need to have High Risk insurance for 3 years.

They have access to insurance claims records/ DMV records. They can easily find claims on file from you through choicepoint by lexis nexis. Never lie on any form this can cause your insurance to be cancelled and if you get into an accident your claim can be denied for not disclosing the accident. You can check out your claims history for free on this site https://personalreports.lexisnexis.com/fact_act_claims_bundle/landing.jsp ,, entitles you to a free C.L.U.E report once a year.

it’s all in the database. do not lie or your policy may be voided when you try to make a claim.

Insurance Services Office

The Insurance Services Office, or ISO has made a business out of compiling insurance data from claims reported all over the country. ISO has a huge datatbase that tracks the SSN/tax ID numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers, type of claim, vehicle identification numbers and other identifiable information. The information is then offered to clients (*for a fee, of course) such as insurance companies to more easily identify risky clients and fraud, among other things. I am an insurance adjuster for a large vehicle rental company and I use it on a daily basis to help identify fraudulent claims. I see many ISO reports and most of the claims reported are entirely legit, but most importantly, I see the claims frequency, which is obviously an indicator of possible fraud AND of risky policyholders.

You should be honest with your agent about any prior claims for two reasons:

1. Your coverage could be entirely voided for “mis-representation” and you could personally become liable for any and all monetary damages

2. Should YOU suffer a loss and file a claim with your Primary Carrier and it is discovered that you falsified information, it will be a ‘red flag’ indicating possible fraud to your insurance adjuster.

Accidents happen, that’s what insurance is for. Insurance professionals understand and they do not automatically assume the worst. Multiple claims in a short period of time may cause your premium to increase a little, but overall, there is no disadvantage to being truthful with your agent or your adjuster.

Hope this helps!
